  • About Us

AXA Africa Specialty Risks: Our Mission

Our mission: To focus on our clients and facilitate growth in Africa

AXA Africa Specialty Risks was formed in May 2016 to provide local and international businesses investing and trading in Africa access to the full range of insurance and risk mitigation tools on the market. Our holistic approach to risk cover also gives banks, debt and equity investors the confidence to lend to projects and business ventures in the region.

Our philosophy is not to wait for business to come to us in the underwriting box in London. We instead take a proactive approach – finding and working with clients on the ground in Africa, in order to understand their specific needs and provide solutions. We have already seen Africa make great progress. By helping local economies to grow, local infrastructure can improve and business can flourish. Working hand-in-glove with our clients – offering them proper risk management tools, insurance cover and a chance to make their business more sustainable – we can look forward to further growth.

  • Our People

Our People: Characterised by experience and expertise

Our people have years of in-depth experience of the insurance market, maintain close connections to Africa, and specialise in providing corporate advice to business across the continent. We count on underwriters with the entrepreneurial spirit and enthusiasm of their clients, who thoroughly understand and can pinpoint each and every risk faced by businesses and investors in Africa. Crucially, they know how to accurately price them – increasing the viability of many deals, projects and investments.

Our staff understand the local markets, speak the language of our clients, and appreciate their needs. Our underwriters maintain close and regular contact with brokers, local insurers and end-clients. This connectivity to our key stakeholders is crucial to our service and offering.

Our Foundations: Built on strong collaboration

As a special purpose syndicate, AXA Africa Specialty Risks benefits from the close collaboration of industry-leading practitioners. It combines the reach and strong balance sheet of global insurance provider AXA with the expertise, innovation and flexibility of underwriters at Lloyds of London – both of which boast robust international credit ratings (AA- from Fitch and A+ from S&P Global Ratings).

We have partnered with Lloyd’s underwriter Chaucer in order to offer specialist cover to our clients. The emerging market-focused underwriter is a market leader in pricing energy, political risk, trade credit, and political violence and terrorism risks in Africa. Leveraging the know-how of AXA’s subsidiary, AXA MATRIX, we can tap the resources of specialist engineers to pinpoint key risks and highlight how to manage them. We only work with the best: from well-connected brokers, who understand their client needs and have access to the decision makers, to leading law firms, which can help our clients structure their deals.
